How the Free Time Calculator Works
This free online time calculator converts each time value to a total number of seconds, performs the operation, then converts back to HH:MM:SS. For addition: 2:30:00 is 9,000 seconds and 1:45:00 is 6,300 seconds — added together that is 15,300 seconds, which the calculator then formats as 4:15:00.
For subtraction, the same logic applies. If the result is negative — meaning the second time was larger than the first — the free time calculator shows a negative result prefixed with a minus sign, rather than wrapping around to an incorrect positive value. This is useful when checking deficits, like how much overtime was missed against a target.
The calculator does not cap at 24 hours. Add 36 hours to 12 hours and you get 48:00:00. This makes it practical for summing total work hours across a week, or adding up video durations for a playlist. Available free online for any browser.

Converting Time to Decimal Hours
Decimal hours are used in payroll and billing. To convert HH:MM to decimal, divide the minutes by 60 and add to the whole hours. Examples:
- 7:30 = 7 + 30/60 = 7.5 hours
- 8:15 = 8 + 15/60 = 8.25 hours
- 1:45 = 1 + 45/60 = 1.75 hours
- 0:20 = 0 + 20/60 ≈ 0.333 hours
