BMI Formula

Body Mass Index is calculated by dividing your weight by the square of your height.

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m)

Example:

70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.9

Note: BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnostic measure. It does not account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution.

What BMI Actually Measures

A BMI calculator is one of the most commonly used health screening tools worldwide — and for good reason. BMI — Body Mass Index — is a ratio of weight to height squared. It was developed in the 1830s by Belgian statistician Adolphe Quetelet as a population-level tool, not a diagnostic one. Doctors use it as a quick screening flag, not a verdict.

At a population level, BMI correlates reasonably well with body fat and health risks. Someone with a BMI of 32 is statistically more likely to have metabolic issues than someone at 22. But "statistically more likely" is very different from a personal diagnosis — there's enormous individual variation.

If your BMI falls outside the normal range, it's worth a conversation with a doctor. It's a prompt for investigation, not a sentence.

Where the BMI Calculator Has Limits

Athletes & Muscle Mass

Muscle is denser than fat. A 5'10" athlete weighing 210 lbs might have 10% body fat and a BMI of 30 — technically "obese." Many professional athletes fall into this category.

Ethnic Variation

Asian populations tend to carry higher metabolic risk at lower BMI thresholds. The WHO has noted that a BMI of 23 may be equivalent to 25 in health risk terms for some Asian ethnic groups.

Age & Body Composition

Older adults naturally lose muscle and gain fat — same BMI, different body composition. For adults over 65, a slightly higher BMI (up to 27) is associated with better health outcomes in some studies.

Risks of Being Overweight

  • •High blood pressure and heart disease
  • •Type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance
  • •Stroke and sleep apnea
  • •Certain cancers and gallbladder disease
  • •Osteoarthritis and joint problems

Risks of Being Underweight

  • •Malnutrition and vitamin deficiencies
  • •Osteoporosis and weakened bones
  • •Weakened immune system
  • •Reproductive complications
  • •Higher surgical complication risk

BMI Prime — A Simpler Way to Read Your Result

BMI Prime divides your BMI by 25 (the upper limit of normal). A BMI of 22.9 gives a BMI Prime of 0.92 — meaning you're at 92% of the upper healthy limit. A BMI Prime above 1.0 means overweight; below 0.74 means underweight. It's just a different lens on the same number, but some people find the ratio easier to reason about than the raw BMI value. Your BMI calculator result above already gives you the raw BMI — BMI Prime is just a different way to interpret the same number.
