Your grade before the final exam

How much the final counts toward your grade

The final grade you want to achieve in the course

Formula

required = (target − current × (1 − weight/100)) ÷ (weight/100)

= (90 − 82 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 108.7%

How the Free Final Grade Calculator Works

This free online final grade calculator uses one equation to solve a question every student asks before finals week: what do I need to get on this exam? The math reverses the weighted average formula — instead of calculating a grade, it solves for the unknown score that makes the equation balance.

Your course grade is a weighted combination of pre-final work and the final exam itself. If your pre-final work covers 70% of the grade and you currently hold an 82%, that portion contributes 82 × 0.70 = 57.4 points toward your final grade. The remaining 30% (the final) needs to bring the total to your target. Calculate it free online in seconds.

Formula Breakdown

required = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w

Example: target=85%, current=79%, final=25%
= (85 − 79 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25
= (85 − 59.25) ÷ 0.25
= 25.75 ÷ 0.25
= 103% (not achievable)

In this case the final grade calculator shows the target is out of reach. Drop the target from 85% to 80% and rerun: required becomes (80 − 59.25) ÷ 0.25 = 83% — very doable. That's the value of the calculator: it shows you which targets are realistic before you walk into the exam room.

How to Use This Final Grade Calculator

1

Enter your current course grade as a percentage (all graded work so far).

2

Enter the weight of your final exam — check your syllabus if unsure.

3

Enter your target course grade (e.g., 90 for an A-, 80 for a B-).

4

The required score appears immediately. If it exceeds 100%, the target is not reachable.

5

Adjust the target grade down until you find the highest achievable goal.

Multiple remaining assignments? Add up the weights of everything left — finals, presentations, projects. Enter the combined weight as your "Final Exam Weight" to see what average you need across all remaining work.

Final Exam Strategy: Making the Math Work for You Online for Free

🎯

Set a Realistic Target

If the final grade calculator shows you need 108% for an A, pivot your goal to a B+ at 87% and check what that requires. Knowing the achievable ceiling prevents wasted effort aiming at an impossible target.

📋

Prioritize High-Weight Finals

A final worth 40% has far more impact than one worth 15%. Run the final grade calculator for each course and allocate your study hours proportionally to the potential grade swing per course.

🔒

Lock In Secure Grades First

If the calculator shows you need only 65% on a final to keep your B, that course is safe. Shift your energy to courses where the required score is 85–95% — those are the ones where study effort translates directly to grade improvement.

💬

Talk to Your Professor Early

If the final grade calculator shows your target is mathematically impossible, don't wait until after the exam. Office hours before finals week is the right time to ask about extra credit, incomplete grades, or grade replacement options.

What Exactly Is Your "Current Grade"?

Your current grade in this free online final grade calculator is your course standing right now — after all graded assignments, quizzes, and midterms, but before the final exam. Find it in your LMS (Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle) or ask your professor directly. If some assignments are still ungraded, use your best estimate. The more accurate this number, the more reliable the required final exam score will be. A grade that's off by even a few percentage points can shift the required score by 5–10 points when the final carries heavy weight.
