How This Depreciation Calculator Works
The depreciation calculator takes three inputs: asset cost, salvage value, and useful life in years. It then applies your chosen depreciation method to produce annual depreciation expense, accumulated depreciation, and remaining book value for each year of the asset life.
For straight-line depreciation, the calculator divides the depreciable base (cost minus salvage) evenly across all years. A $50,000 asset with $5,000 salvage value over 7 years gives $6,429 annual depreciation. The book value drops by exactly that amount each year until reaching the salvage value.
For accelerated methods, the depreciation calculator applies a percentage to the current book value rather than the original cost. This produces higher depreciation in early years and lower amounts later, which is useful for assets that lose value quickly and for maximizing early tax deductions.
Common Asset Useful Life Guidelines
IRS Publication 946 provides detailed guidelines. Enter your asset details in the depreciation calculator above.
Depreciation Methods Compared
Straight-Line
Equal depreciation expense every year. Best for assets that provide consistent value over time — office furniture, buildings, leasehold improvements. Simple to calculate and widely accepted for financial reporting. Use the depreciation calculator to generate the full schedule.
Declining Balance
Applies a fixed rate (1/life) to the remaining book value each year. Produces higher deductions early and lower ones later. Useful for assets like vehicles that lose value faster in the first few years. The depreciation calculator shows the declining curve clearly in the bar chart.
Double Declining
Uses twice the straight-line rate (2/life) for even more aggressive early depreciation. A 5-year asset depreciates at 40% of book value per year. Maximizes tax deductions upfront when the asset generates the most revenue. Model it with the depreciation calculator.
