How This ROI Calculator Works
This ROI calculator uses the standard return on investment formula: ROI = (Final Value - Initial Cost) / Initial Cost × 100. It also computes the annualized return using the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) formula, which adjusts for the holding period so you can compare investments of different durations.
For example, you bought stock for $5,000 three years ago and it's now worth $7,200. The ROI calculator shows a total return of $2,200 (44% ROI) and an annualized return of 12.9%. This annualized figure lets you compare this investment directly against a bond yielding 5% or an index fund returning 10%.
The calculator handles both gains and losses. If your $5,000 investment dropped to $3,800, it shows a -24% return on investment. This transparency helps you decide whether to hold a losing position or reallocate your capital.

3 Common ROI Mistakes to Avoid
Ignoring Time
A 100% return on investment sounds amazing — but it matters whether that happened in 2 years or 20 years. In 2 years, that's a 41% annualized return. Over 20 years, it's only 3.5% annually — barely beating inflation. Always use annualized ROI when comparing investments held for different periods.
Forgetting Costs
Include all costs in your ROI calculation: transaction fees, maintenance, taxes, and management fees. A rental property might show 12% gross return, but after property management (8-10%), maintenance (1-2%), and taxes, net ROI could be 6-7%. The ROI calculator gives accurate results only when you include all costs.
Cherry-Picking Dates
Measuring return on investment from a market bottom to a peak gives a misleadingly high result. The S&P 500 returned over 400% from March 2009 to January 2022 — but only 175% from January 2000 to January 2022. Use consistent measurement periods and the ROI calculator to get an honest picture.
