How This VAT Calculator Works
The VAT calculator operates in two modes. In "Add VAT" mode, it takes your net amount and multiplies it by the VAT rate to compute the tax. Adding 20% VAT to a $500 item means $500 times 0.20 equals $100 in VAT, for a gross total of $600. The formula is simple: Gross = Net x (1 + VAT Rate).
In "Remove VAT" mode, the VAT calculator works backward from a VAT-inclusive price. It divides the gross amount by (1 + VAT Rate) to extract the net price. For example, a $600 VAT-inclusive price at 20% gives a net of $500 and VAT of $100. This is useful when you receive a receipt that includes VAT and need to know the pre-tax cost.
The VAT calculator supports both preset rates used by major economies and a custom rate field for any percentage. Whether you deal with EU VAT, UK VAT, or GST in Australia and Canada, this tool handles every scenario.

3 Common VAT Scenarios
Invoicing
When creating invoices, you need to show the net price, VAT amount, and gross total separately. The VAT calculator gives you all three figures instantly. For a $2,500 consulting service at 20% VAT, the invoice shows $2,500 net, $500 VAT, and $3,000 gross.
Price Comparison
Different countries display prices with or without VAT. When comparing international prices, remove VAT from the gross price to get the true net cost. A $120 product with 20% VAT has a net price of $100, the same as a $110 product with 10% VAT (net $100). Use the VAT calculator to normalize prices.
VAT Returns
Businesses reclaim VAT paid on purchases. If you bought $10,000 in supplies at 20% VAT, you paid $2,000 in VAT that can be reclaimed. The VAT calculator helps you quickly determine the reclaimable amount from any receipt.
