How the US Navy Body Fat Formula Works
The US Navy body fat calculator was developed to assess fitness in military personnel without requiring expensive equipment. This free online tool uses circumference measurements — neck, waist, and for women, hips — combined with height to estimate body density and fat percentage.
The formula relies on the observation that fat and lean tissue distribute differently across the body. Waist circumference strongly predicts visceral fat; neck circumference roughly tracks lean mass. The ratio between them, adjusted for height, gives a reasonably accurate fat estimate you can calculate online in under a minute.
For a 175 cm male with a 38 cm neck and 85 cm waist, the free body fat calculator returns approximately 18–20% — squarely in the average range. The formula is reliable within 3–4 percentage points for most adults.
How to Take Accurate Measurements
Neck
Measure just below the larynx (Adam's apple), perpendicular to the neck axis. Keep your head level. Do not flex your neck.
Waist (Men)
Measure at the navel level, horizontally. Breathe out normally and measure immediately — do not suck in or push out.
Waist (Women)
Measure at the narrowest point of the torso, typically just above the hip bones. Stand naturally — no posing.
Hips (Women only)
Measure at the widest point of the hips and buttocks, keeping the tape parallel to the floor.

Body Fat Percentage vs BMI
BMI measures weight relative to height. Body fat percentage measures the actual proportion of fat tissue in your body. These are different things — and for many people, the difference matters. Our free online body fat calculator gives you the metric that BMI simply cannot.
A 180 cm man weighing 90 kg with 15% body fat has a BMI of 27.8 (overweight) but is in the fitness category by body fat standards. A sedentary 180 cm man at the same weight with 28% body fat has the same BMI but is in the obese range by body composition. The free body fat calculator reveals what BMI can't.
Use both metrics together for the most complete picture — neither alone tells the full story of body composition and metabolic health. Both our free online BMI and body fat calculators are available at no cost.
Tips for Accurate Body Fat Tracking
Measure at the same time of day — morning before eating is most consistent.
Use a non-stretch fabric tape measure, not a metal ruler.
Take 2–3 readings per site and average them for better accuracy.
Recheck every 4–6 weeks — fat changes slowly with proper diet and exercise.
