How the Height Calculator Works

This height calculator uses multiple methods to predict adult height. The primary method is the mid-parental height formula, which averages both parents' heights and adjusts for the child's sex. For boys, 2.5 inches are added; for girls, 2.5 inches are subtracted. This gives a target height with a range of about plus or minus 2 inches.

The Khamis-Roche method incorporates the child's current height and weight along with parental heights to give a more refined estimate. It was developed using data from the Fels Longitudinal Study and is considered one of the most accurate non-clinical methods for height prediction.

No height calculator can be perfectly precise — genetics is complex, and environmental factors matter. Think of the result as a well-informed estimate, not a guarantee. The height calculator is most useful for identifying whether a child is tracking toward their genetic potential.

Factors That Influence Adult Height

Genetics (60–80%)

Parental heights are the strongest predictor. Multiple genes contribute, which is why siblings can vary in height. The height calculator uses parental data as its primary input.

Nutrition

Adequate protein, calcium, vitamin D, and zinc during childhood are crucial. Chronic malnutrition during growth years can prevent a child from reaching predicted height.

Sleep & Exercise

Growth hormone is primarily released during deep sleep. Regular physical activity promotes healthy bone development. Both contribute to reaching full height potential.

Health Conditions

Chronic illnesses, hormonal disorders, and certain medications can affect growth. If growth seems off-track, consult a pediatric endocrinologist.

Growth Patterns by Age and Gender

Boys and girls grow at different rates. Girls typically hit their growth spurt earlier, around ages 10–14, and stop growing around 14–16. Boys experience their growth spurt later, around ages 12–16, and may continue growing until 18–20. The height calculator accounts for these differences when predicting adult height. During peak growth, children can grow 3–4 inches per year. A free height calculator like this one helps parents track whether their child is on pace with expected growth curves — but always consult your pediatrician if you have concerns about growth patterns.
