How the Unit Converter Works
Every measurement category has a base unit: meters for length, grams for weight, milliliters for volume, and so on. When you convert from one unit to another, the unit converter first translates your input into the base unit (by multiplying), then translates from the base unit to the target (by dividing). Temperature is the exception — it uses dedicated formulas because the scales don't share a common zero.
For example, converting 5 miles to kilometers: 5 mi × 1609.344 (meters per mile) = 8046.72 meters. Then 8046.72 / 1000 (meters per km) = 8.04672 km. The unit converter does this in a single step behind the scenes using standard conversion factors recognized by NIST and the International Bureau of Weights and Measures.

What People Use a Unit Converter For
Construction & DIY
Building plans from different countries often mix metric and imperial measurements. A free unit converter saves you from costly errors — getting an 8-foot board when you needed 8 meters is an expensive mistake.
Cooking & Recipes
That British recipe calls for 200g of flour, but your measuring cups are in ounces. Or maybe a recipe uses milliliters and you need cups. The unit converter handles volume, weight, and temperature conversions for the kitchen.
Tech & Data Storage
Is 500 GB enough for your needs? How many MB is a 2 TB drive really? Data storage conversions use binary (base-2) math, which our unit converter handles correctly — 1 GB = 1,073,741,824 bytes, not an even billion.
Unit Conversion Tips
Getting accurate results from any unit converter starts with understanding the basics.
Check Your Category
A fluid ounce (volume) is not the same as an ounce (weight). Make sure you are converting within the right measurement category. Our unit converter organizes everything into clear tabs so you never mix them up.
US vs. Imperial Gallons
A US gallon (3,785 mL) is smaller than an imperial gallon (4,546 mL). This unit converter uses US measurements by default, which is the most common standard online.
Data: Binary vs. Decimal
Hard drive manufacturers use decimal (1 TB = 1,000 GB), but your operating system uses binary (1 TB = 1,024 GB). That is why a "500 GB" drive shows as ~465 GB on your computer.
