Free Volume Calculator Online
Calculate the volume and surface area of any common 3D shape with this free volume calculator. Select a shape, enter dimensions, and get instant results with the formula shown step by step.
Enter the side length of the cube.
Cube Volume
V = s³
Surface Area Formula
SA = 6s²
How the Volume Calculator Works
Select the 3D shape you need from the tabs above. Each shape has its own set of inputs. The volume calculator applies the exact geometric formula to your dimensions and displays both the volume (in cubic units) and the surface area (in square units). Every formula is shown alongside the result so you can follow the math. Whether you are solving a homework problem or sizing a real-world container, this volume calculator gives you both numbers at once.
When You Need a Volume Calculator
Calculating volume comes up more often than most people expect. Filling a fish tank? That is a box. Pouring concrete for a post hole? That is a cylinder. Figuring out how much soil a flower pot holds? Probably a cone or a truncated cone. Shipping a product in a sphere mold? You need both volume and surface area. This free volume calculator covers the six most common shapes and gives you accurate results in seconds.
Volume Formulas Reference
| Shape | Volume Formula | Surface Area | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cube | V = s³ | SA = 6s² | s=5 → V=125 |
| Box | V = lwh | SA = 2(lw+lh+wh) | 6×4×3 → V=72 |
| Sphere | V = (4/3)πr³ | SA = 4πr² | r=5 → V≈523.6 |
| Cylinder | V = πr²h | SA = 2πr²+2πrh | r=4,h=10 → V≈502.7 |
| Cone | V = (1/3)πr²h | SA = πr²+πr·slant | r=4,h=8 → V≈134.0 |
| Pyramid | V = (1/3)lwh | Base + lateral faces | 6×4×9 → V=72 |
Volume vs. Capacity
Volume and capacity describe the same thing from different angles. Volume is a geometric measurement (cubic centimeters, cubic inches). Capacity is the practical equivalent in liquid units (liters, gallons). Knowing how to convert between them is useful.
Cubic cm to Liters
1 liter = 1,000 cm³. A box 10 cm on each side holds exactly 1 liter. Use the volume calculator to find cm³, then divide by 1,000.
Cubic inches to Gallons
1 US gallon = 231 cubic inches. Divide the volume calculator result by 231 to find gallons. A cylinder with r=4" and h=10" holds about 2.18 gallons.
Cubic feet to Cubic yards
1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet. For landscaping and concrete, divide cubic feet by 27. A common mistake is dividing by 3 instead of 27.
